Trauma is not just what happened to you — it is how your brain and body responded to overwhelming experiences. When the nervous system is overwhelmed by events it cannot process, those experiences get stored differently in the brain. They can continue to affect you years or decades later through flashbacks, nightmares, hypervigilance, emotional numbness, difficulty trusting others, and chronic physical symptoms.
At Vital Health, we understand that trauma and addiction are deeply connected. Research shows that 60-80% of people seeking addiction treatment have experienced significant trauma. Many people use substances as a way to cope with unresolved trauma — numbing emotional pain, managing anxiety, or escaping intrusive memories. Without addressing the underlying trauma, recovery from addiction is often incomplete.
Our trauma therapists create a safe, predictable environment where healing happens at your pace. You are never pressured to share more than you are ready to. The goal is not to forget what happened, but to process it so it no longer controls your present-day life.
An evidence-based therapy that helps your brain reprocess traumatic memories. Uses bilateral stimulation to reduce the emotional intensity of traumatic experiences without requiring you to describe them in detail.
Best for: Single-event trauma, PTSD, phobias, disturbing memories
A structured approach that helps you understand how trauma affects your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Teaches coping skills and gradually processes traumatic memories in a safe, controlled way.
Best for: Complex trauma, childhood abuse, ongoing trauma symptoms
A body-based approach that helps release trauma stored in the nervous system. Focuses on physical sensations and body awareness to complete the body's natural stress response cycle.
Best for: Body-based symptoms, chronic tension, dissociation
Addresses trauma and substance use simultaneously rather than requiring sobriety before trauma work. Recognizes that both conditions fuel each other and must be treated together.
Best for: Co-occurring PTSD and addiction, self-medication patterns
Trauma is one of the most common underlying factors in both addiction and mental health disorders. Studies show that 60 to 80 percent of people seeking treatment for substance use disorders have experienced significant trauma — whether childhood abuse, domestic violence, sexual assault, combat exposure, accidents, or the cumulative effects of growing up in an unstable environment. At Vital Health in Maumee, Ohio, we provide specialized trauma therapy that addresses these deep-rooted experiences so that true healing can occur.
Our trauma therapists are trained in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), a therapy recognized by the World Health Organization and the Department of Veterans Affairs as a first-line treatment for PTSD. EMDR does not require you to describe your trauma in detail or relive painful memories. Instead, it uses bilateral stimulation to help your brain reprocess traumatic memories so they no longer trigger intense emotional or physical reactions. Many clients experience significant relief within 8 to 12 sessions.
In addition to EMDR, our team uses Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), trauma-focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) for adolescents, somatic experiencing for body-stored trauma, and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) skills for emotional regulation. We treat all forms of trauma including childhood abuse and neglect, sexual assault, domestic violence, combat and military trauma, accidents and natural disasters, community violence, medical trauma, and intergenerational trauma passed through families.
