Certified Peer Support Specialists who have walked the path of recovery themselves. Real-world guidance, mentoring, and advocacy from people who truly understand.
Available to all clients. Covered by Ohio Medicaid.
At Vital Health, peer support is not an add-on — it is woven into the fabric of everything we do. Our organization was founded by people in recovery, and many of our staff members have lived experience with addiction. This is not a coincidence. We believe that people who have walked the path of recovery are uniquely positioned to guide others through it.
Our Certified Peer Support Specialists (CPSS) are trained and certified through OhioMHAS. They provide one-on-one mentoring, help you navigate the recovery system, connect you with community resources, accompany you to appointments, and serve as living proof that long-term recovery is possible.
Research shows that peer support services improve treatment engagement, reduce relapse rates, decrease hospitalizations, and increase overall quality of life. When you see someone who has been where you are — and is now thriving — it changes what you believe is possible for yourself.

Peer recovery support is one of the most powerful tools in addiction treatment, yet it remains underutilized across Northwest Ohio. At Vital Health in Maumee, our Certified Peer Support Specialists (CPSS) are not just trained professionals — they are people who have personally overcome addiction and now dedicate their lives to helping others do the same. This shared experience creates a unique bond of trust and understanding that clinical therapy alone cannot replicate.
Ohio recognizes peer support as a Medicaid-billable service when delivered by OhioMHAS-certified specialists as part of a treatment plan. This means that for most of our clients, peer support services are available at no cost. Our peer specialists work alongside therapists, psychiatrists, and case managers as integrated members of your treatment team — not as a separate or lesser service, but as a core component of evidence-based recovery care.
Research published in the Journal of Substance Abuse Treatment demonstrates that peer support services reduce relapse rates by up to 22 percent, decrease emergency room visits, increase treatment retention, and improve overall quality of life in recovery. At Vital Health, our peer specialists provide recovery mentoring, crisis support, system navigation (helping you access housing, employment, legal aid, and benefits), community connection, and accountability through regular check-ins. They are available throughout your entire treatment journey — from your first day in PHP or IOP through transition to independent living.
Whether you are just beginning to consider treatment or you are months into recovery and need additional support, our peer team is here for you. Call (419) 740-3022 to connect with a peer specialist who understands your journey.
